Not on the dialogue table: Nancy Lanza and HER money and guns killed

I learned something when my kids were growing up. We were broke but not poor as I was in grad school in southern Illinois and my kids attended the only high school with children of professors and doctors and lawyers.  We had a nice apt on campus but little money.

My kids would tell me about the beer parties the high school students would host when the parents were out of town or on vacation.  My kids did not attend.  I never had STREET DRUGS OF ANY KIND, PRESCRIPTION DRUGS OF ANY KIND, BEER, WINE, CIGARETTES, GUNS, OR WEAPONS IN THE HOUSE.  This is what I taught my kids without saying a word.  They never saw me imbibe any of the above because that was beyond my spirititual beliefs.  They were surprised at what the middle class white kids would get into and so was I.

I also learned from other teen relatives that often the parents had the street drugs in the home and that is where the kids got their hits too.  So a thought crossed my mind: How much of this is related to SES and available money for kids who do not work?

My kids did not have money to buy beer or guns and I certainly never had them around for them to “borrow” or go to shooting range with.  Children who are not our own and those who are our own learn what they see and are taught in non verbal manners.  The violent video games and movies are all apart of the mix.

This is why this issue is so difficult.  Gun laws are on the books.  We don’t need the bullets that kill the shit out of a person nor the handguns.  But then again we don’t need the alcohol that often fuels these fires.  What to do?  Point the finger and the blame where it lies.  These school killings only happened among middle class white areas almost exclusively.  Most of the shooters were white or NOT black but Asian.

In general due to economic restraists blacks don’t buy rifles and expensive guns and killing machines. Where would they store them? And if they could store them how would they buy them and the bullets to go with them.  Why would they buy them when they have precious little money for other things they would first ask themselves. Not saying they are better parents but it is a financial reality.

What would solve this problem that is so multi-faceted?  Who is to blame: society, parents, guns available legally and illegally, violent culture, revenge gang crimes.

The list goes on.  On the other side of the rifle coin we have urban blacks using and buying handguns which were banned in Chicago. Mind you they are cheaper weapons and so are the bullets and also easier to get by anyone.  But they still kill one person one black boy or girl or child at a time.  No one with a handgun is going to a school and shoot it up. They won’t get too far.  But they will do a drive by and kill whomever they can who LOOKS like them.

Yes, blacks and browns have more crimes on the books than whites. But does it matter?  If you think it matters then you are also on the side of where parents and fathers have gone wrong by their absence in the life of their sons, their black and brown sons who commit most of these violent crimes.  Why can’t this be applied to whites and their money and their big guns?

Now you tell me: Ambassador Stevens gay? MUST READ

In case you missed “Brideshead Revisited” back in the day you can watch it streaming on Netflix.  It is for the true anglophile like myself.  It was profoundly well done.  About two white Englishmen one middle class one from the upper crust which was the true meaning of high falutin folks.  But the problem if Stevens was gay is that the Arab world is fiercely anti gay and homophobic in the extreme and the frazy indefensible.  As you may know and reported that Stevens was sodomized and then killed.  I kept wondering about that.  I mean why would they sodomize this man?  It may have been done with an object rather than an actual organ.  How horribly cruel of these bigots.

Dino explained in great detail that the brutal sodomizing of Stevens’ corpse was something that Muslims do to show the “utmost disrespect to the body” and that this is “a great insult in Islam” reserved for homosexuals.  ”It is like making him a woman in death and he will be a woman now after life” the Serbian explained to me.  There’s a good chance this guy was Muslim too, and gay, which makes my head spin more than a little since he seemed to have no anger at all in his voice that Muslims in Libya assassinated the American ambassador and then sodomized his corpse.

Who is Cindy Brunson?

She looks a little like Halle Berry with the short hair.  But with long hair and some of her photos she looks white. But clearly she is biracial to me.  That is not unusual for a person to look white in some photos and not white in others.  I admit I don’t follow sports so this is news to me.  Who is she married to?

Josh,I’m coming up on 10 years here at ESPN this September. I’ve been a regular host on the weekend morning SportsCenter for a little over a year now. Before that, I would have spot fill-in duty on the late SportsCenter shows on the weekends.

This is the first that I’ve heard of this young lady who says she is not new to sports news.

She looks clearly biracial to me.  And since she is quite pretty we can add her to our list of biracial beauties in the news or reading the news LOL. I add the family photos below to show how a black person can look perfectly white and have no white parents or grandparents.  My kids have green eyes.  Some have now married whites and are having children with them.  The result: The creole marrying white have children who look Anglo Saxon white…see below. My brother’s son, my nephew, married a white woman and their baby has blond hair and blue eyes and white skin.  So Cindy’s looks are not unfamiliar to me.

Now some people are multiracial like myself. The difference being that I do not have one white and one black parent but look biracial and so do my children.  In some sense we look like typical Chicago blacks folks but we are not.  If Cindy were in New Orleans she would be mistaken for a Creole. My family is Creole which means we have Italian and French and Indian blood and African.  The African blood makes us colored Creoles. This is a unique post in that you have in one place three past life brother’s and sisters together again.

A Tale of Two Teachers

This is Lincoln Park High School (Chicago, IL,...

This is Lincoln Park High School (Chicago, IL, USA) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Heloise has been teaching in Texas for over a decade.  It was plan B for me.  Plan A was to go to medical school.  Taking a science degree is how I met another future science teacher (black women make up less than 1% of science teachers in the US)  Karen Lewis and I  became fast friends and ended up science teachers.

I lived in Chicago on and off for most of my life.  As stated in my last article I attended Catholic school for 12 years and except for one horrible year in a public school vowed I would never go back to a CPS.

I’ve  been here since 1997.  While living in Chicago my kids were in elementary school while I was at Chicago State to get my BS in science.

My daughter in second grade was told by her teacher that she “could not read.”  When I found out that she could not read I took her out of that local Chicago Public School, tutored her at home and put her in a better CPS

Finally, I moved to Carbondale because I thought I would go to their medical school and also to get them out of  Chicago because I knew I could not afford Catholic School tution it was over 2K a year and I did not have the money. I was a poor student on food stamps and student grants.  So they completed education in Carbondale PS.  That worked out well because now my daughter has a clinical doctorate in physical therapy and my son just got his master’s in divinity.

What are the chances if they had remained in CPS?

Here in Texas we are beholden to the stinkin state tests.  Now called STAAR test.  Then there was TAKS then something before that. My students have continually made progress on the science test regardless to what they have been called.

I have not received any merit pay.  There are no unions here.  I don’t need unions because they don’t help because in Texas they are not unions.  Our salary is decent because the cost of living is low in my town.  I bought my house before the area got expensive.

Unlike Chicago or CPS we teachers do not have to live in the city that we teach in.  YES, Chicago teachers MUST LIVE in CHICAGO!  The rents are high there but so is their salary.  Most buy homes or condos.  I know a few who lived, stupidly, in apartments for decades.  Then finally bought a home in Chicago.

Yes, Karen is very well educated.  We met at CSU but she attended Dartmouth for undergrad.  I did not go to expensive schools but a small private school in California and finished at CSU to become a doctor.  Well, neither of us became doctors.  We met because she and my cousin and myself planned to become doctors or dentists.  My cousin did succeed but Karen and I became teachers. There is nothing wrong with that.  Everyone cannot be a teacher and not just because of the educational requirements.

Yes, teachers, most are highly educated.  There are lots of hoops to jump through in order to become a teacher. In my experience the black teachers down here were forced to leave teaching because they could not pass the many tests required.

Cool, Calm and Collected advice to Obama

You can be tough as well as cool, calm and collected as Heloise is when confronted with crazy people.  Why just the other day Heloise proved to be just that, i.e., cool not crazy.  I was shopping when a big black woman tried to squeeze by my shopping cart at Wal Mart where I was standing (to the right) and waiting for my daughter to pay for her items.

She said “excuse me.” I said “I ain’t moving.” She got ugly and started to push past me but realized she was too fat.  She said “I said EXCUSE me.”  Well the only time that’s appropriate is if we both got to the same spot at the same time.  This was clearly not the case…I was there first and not in the way of traffic.  I think the woman with her squeezed by just before.  I just ignored her.

Yes, I stood my ground and said walking is like driving you should stay to your right.  She got really mad.  That’s how you can tell you’re right.

She said some crap I could not hear because I don’t hear too well anymore.  My daughter said she said something like she would sweep the floor up with me.  But I no hear her and that’s a good thing.  That helped me to remain cool and carry on.

Then another day I was shopping wearing baggy unpressed shorts and an unpressed red T shirt with a black sun visor that said “Chicago” on it and a bright blue fanny pack and my big floppy bike riding sandals.

This old white woman asked a couple of times, I didn’t hear her and was not listening “do you work here?” Cool as you could be I gave her a good look at my whole outfit and said “do I look like I work HERE?”  She said oh I am so sorry.  What she saw was my BROWN skin! Liar.

Advice to Obama you too can remain cool, calm and collected if you act like you did not hear half of what people say about you.

What I told my son

Amtrak station in Carbondale, Illinois

My two now-grown children were teens in the 1990s.   We lived in Carbondale, IL at the time.  There were two sides of town the black east side and the white west side.  When I went to rent the woman tried to steer me to the black side but I told her I was a grad student and needed a quiet place.  So, we ended up on the white side of town, mostly, and my kids went to a mostly white high school and their friends were white and black.

I recall telling my son not to bring home any babies out of wedlock.  That to have fun but to graduate high school.  Be a child when you are a child and a teen when a teen and when a man be a man.

I warned him that if he did not live right that the only choices for a bad black boy were either death or prison. My son did go astray for a while dropping out of high school and committing petty crimes that landed him in jail.  We laugh about it now because when the jailers told him to call me and come and get him because they told him “you don’t belong here.” He told them she won’t come to St. Louis and get me, I was living in Chicago at the time and my transmission had gone out in the car and I had a new job.  Yup they called and I said no I won’t come and get him.

They said what if we put him on a train will you pick him up at the station.  I said of course.  So my former mother in law and I drove and picked him up. It was unprecedented for them to send a child home with a ticket home with all charges dropped against him.

He went astray but was saved and now lives a happy life, successful life with his wife and three kids.

I was a model mother in that I told my kids I was their role model. Of course I never had drugs, had men living with me, or alcohol or cigarettes around them. But I never told my son to act a certain way in public because he was black.  Since he has fair skin, green eyes, and sandy hair when young he was often mistaken for white or biracial.

After returning to Chicago in 1995 (he returned to high school in the very area where Obama was doing his community organizing!), where my kids lived most of their lives among enlightened blacks. For me the thought never crossed my mind that anyone other than some black thugs who were jealous of the way the men in our family looked and were girl magnets, were to be feared.

Fear of whites harming them because they were “black” was absolutely never an issue and was never discussed. Why? Because most of my friends were white and my children saw me associate with blacks and whites equally and in an intimate fashion as close friends who traveled together and shared hotel rooms etc.

My children today are well rounded and both married tall, dark, handsome people from Mississippi.

The problem with gays like Rosie O’Donnell

Signature of American television personality, Oprah Winfrey. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The biggest problem which is not listed here is that Rosie wanted to talk ad nauseum about being gay.  Who gives a crap? Not even gays liked her talking about being gay all the damn time. She even outed someone on the stay almost and he had not told anyone he was gay.   She is beyond the pale.  I would not only not hire here I have never watched her shows.  Her broadway show flopped too.  Dump Rosie, no, never hire Rosie.

Over the course of the last ten years, the funny, likable Rosie devolved into a boorish, divisive, nasty, partisan big mouth — and who wants to spend an hour a night with a boorish, divisive, nasty, partisan big mouth (who doesn’t believe fire can melt steel)?

By any reasonable standard, Oprah Winfrey could not have found a worse person to prop up her fledgling network. To those of us who have spent a little time outside of Manhattan and Los Angeles, hiring O’Donnell looked the move of a suicidal executive determined to bring down her own network. Why would any sane person choose as their savior the most disliked and unlikable celebrity on a planet where the competition for that title is fierce?

So why does the entertainment media refuse to point out that which is so obvious to the rest of us?

Where’s the bombshell? Soledad asks

Official photographic portrait of US President...

This video at is comical and worth a watch for the simple reason that Soledad stays on the case and wants to know: where’s the bombshell in this video…I don’t get it!

Then a white guy comes on to point out that as a white man he agrees with Soledad and points out that there are all white people in the background cheering and smiling Obama the student on.

Where’s the beef? Methinks the mainstream media is making a big deal out of a molehill or is it a mountain out of a molehill? Regardless we knew that Barack and my sister, who looks white, sat in Jeremiah Wright‘s church for a time.

Chicago people are addicted to radical theology and to radical politics.  We just roll like that.  The women are also addicted to natural hair, or at least they were when I lived there.  Including me we sported long beautiful naturals for years before it caught on again.

Saul Alinsky

Saul Alinsky Love Song

So, what’s in the play? It truly is a love song to Alinsky. In the first few minutes of the play, Alinsky plays Moses – yes, the Biblical Moses – talking to God. The play glorifies Alinsky stealing food from restaurants and organizing others to do the same, explaining, “I saw it as a practical use of social ecology: you had members of the intellectual community, the hope of the future, eating regularly for six months, staying alive till they could make their contributions to society.”

In an introspective moment, Alinsky rips America: “My country … ‘tis of whatthehell / And justice up a tree … How much can you sell / What’s in it for me.” He grins about manipulating the Christian community to back his programs. He talks in glowing terms about engaging in Chicago politics with former Mayor Kelly. He rips the McCarthy committee, mocking, “Everyone was there, when you think back – Cotton Mather, Hester Prynn, Anne Hutchinson, Tom Paine, Tom Jefferson … Brandeis, Holmes … Gene Debs and the socialists … Huey Long … Imperial Wizards of all stripes … Father Coughlin and his money machine … Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd … and a kicking chorus of sterilized reactionaries singing O Come, All Ye Faithful …”

What I am reading now: “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010” by Charles Murray

Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010

Coming Apart (you can get it at above Amazon link for $13.00) starts off just right.  Murray argues that American history can be divided into before JFK was assassinated and after JFK.  Interesting.  He provides many arguments why that is the case and I have to agree with him.  It was the visible dividing line for the cultural heating up of America and its economy and the beginning of the ultra rich in America that made black billionaires possible like Oprah.

I like the book because he does something that most books don’t do: he talks about the middle class (the white definition that would be rich for a black person) and what it means.  I love talk about money and economy and wealth.

I started out life middle class and was never one of the hungry who had to go to an Ivy school, even though I could have if I wanted to.  I married stupid and young.  My ex husband thought like his friends that being on welfare as a young, single black male in Chicago was no big deal.  In fact it seemed de rigeur for many.

My family had never been on welfare or used food stamps and I did not know what it was all about.  He enrolled the family on welfare after we got married and I had my first two children thanks to the health care provided by the government.   We were on AFDC as it was called them for a few years.  After we divorced I immediately got a job.  Years later, I was a college dropout, I returned to college, graduated and got a real job and a real career.

Yes, I make more money than ever and have everything I want and need including a big house that I share with a gray cat, and a new silver gray Ford Focus that’s pretty good on gas.  It is possible for a single mother, former welfare and food stamp user to get a degree and live on their own.
